Curatorial Text – ‘Ave it, by Eli Mengem
Ave It is a British football slang expression that can refer to a variety of things: the impact of a powerful tackle, the reaction to an enthusiastic kick that sends the ball skyward, or simply the anticipation before a match. Ezequiel Suranyi aptly uses this phrase to title his photography exhibition in London this summer: the exhibition documents people and places from the world of British football.

From candid shots of Arsenal fans gathered outside the now-demolished Highbury Stadium to evocative portraits of seasoned Sunday League regulars, Suranyi’s photos chronicle a bygone era of football. Suranyi captures the game and its masses long before today’s explicitly curated, commoditized, and almost performative football culture, with its proliferation of iPhones and influencers that have taken so much away from the authenticity of the game.
As a perfect coda, there’s the almost unbelievable series of photos of the great Diego Maradona, taken poolside at a hotel in Marseille during the 1998 World Cup in France.
The ‘Ave It’ exhibition thus becomes a perfect antidote to the insipid, recycled, and predictable scene of today’s football photography.
